type='text'>MERCEDES-BENZ C 200K

The first overdrive road test of the C- class was back in May 2001 when we tested both the C180 petrol and the C 200 CDI diesel-engined models. We had then bemoaned the lack of bottom-end and mid-range power in the petrol-engined car while being enamoured with the power and torque of the diesel car. In fact the diesel outperformed the petrol version in all departments including fuel efficiency and notably in the driving pleasure aspect. DaimlerChrysler India started making the C200K to add the much required boost to the petrol engine car. The major drawback of the C180 was its lack of low down thrust as most of the time the car is driven in the bottom end of the rev range due to the traffic and road conditions in India. Once you had the engine spinning at higher rpm the C180 was perfectly okay but MBIL knew that it had to address the situation for its entry-level petrol offering and the C200K was the answer. The C-class was always one of the sleeker models amongst the Mercedes-Benz range and with a fresh dose of style inputs it has only become much more aggressive, sportier and meatier in visual appeal. The changes however are subtle and it would take a keen eye to notice the differences between the older car and the newly improved one. For starters the front airdam looks even more beefed up and substantial giving the front end a broader look at the shoulders with a new double slatted air intake to enhance the sportiness. The aggressive stance is further enhanced with the 7-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels shod with wider 205/55 low-profile tyres. The radiator grille too has been transformed going down from four slats to three. The headlamps and fog lamps get the clear lens treatment adding to visual detail. Even at the rear detailed touches add to the visual appeal with the tail lamps now housed in a new layout. This new high brilliance tail lamp set gels with the improved rear bumper to create a dynamic effect that is truly worthy of a sportily-styled saloon.The interiors too have not been left alone, with the centre console now getting the same treatment as on the W211 E-class. Buyers will be treated to a smart array of controls in the instrument cluster as well as in the centre console. While the instrument cluster is now bathed in white light the controls for the Thermatic climate-control system on the centre console have been redesigned with new push-push switches. The entire centre console also comes decked with chrome trim strips and new olive ash wood trim. The entire look definitely builds up to a more upmarket one.The C 200 Kompressor’s 1800cc four-cylinder unit hails from the latest Mercedes-Benz engine family, and is equipped with the unique twin pulse ignition system. It uses a combination of different technologies like supercharging, charged air cooling, four valves per cylinder, fully variable camshaft adjustment and balance to deliver optimum driving enjoyment and smoothness with optimum fuel efficiency. The Mercedes engineers have optimised fuel consumption by improving the thermodynamic efficiency while also shifting the operating points over the entire torque spectrum. The 1.8-litre engine with supercharging has also had a positive effect on the consumption figures thanks to lower frictional losses and improved thermodynamics. The engine achieves its maximum torque of 221Nm between 3500 and 4000rpm. And this helps move it substantially quickly off the line. The twin pulse system and the unique combination of supercharger and balancer shaft resolves one of the
paradoxes encountered in the development of four-cylinder engines. The balancer shafts compensate for vibrations inherent in most engines of this type and thus ensures a level which is exemplary for a four-cylinder engine. One needs to compare this engine with all the other four-cylinder engines in the market today. In other words by using supercharging and the very latest engine mods plus electronics the new four-cylinder powerplant delivers pulling power and smoothness comparable to many other six-cylinder units on the market.The C200K also features the same Tiptronic kind of five-speed automatic gearbox which we have tested on numerous cars sporting the three-pointed star. This gearbox incorporates fuzzy logic control to implement precise gear-shifting as well as ruling out any gear-hunting. It also allows gears to be selected manually with just a touch needed towards the right to shift up and to the left to shift down should you decide to employ manual shifts.The engine output and the power and torque figures of the C200K are on par with the C220 CDI. You could well be wondering how an 1800cc petrol engine can deliver this kind of power output. To set matters straight this is the same engine that powers the E200 K. The C200 K is slightly quicker than the E240 in acceleration even though it is 800cc and 2 cylinders short compared to the V6 mill of the larger and heavier E-class model. The car gets to the 100kmph mark in a blistering 11.43 seconds. And the 221kmph top speed, achieved in 5th gear, makes you perk right up and take notice.What matters most in everyday driving is how the car performs in roll-ons and in-gear acceleration, especially when you have to put your foot down to overtake or just get away from traffic. What impressed me most was the bottom end kick the engine delivered with the car instantaneously responding to just a dab on the accelerator at very low rpm, and this is all thanks to the electronic control and the top line variable valve top end along with the always on-demand supercharger. En route to Mahabaleshwar the car was an absolute dream to drive. Overtaking slow or even fast moving traffic was an absolute doodle. Climbing the ghats all you had to do was stick it in third gear and then you could just accelerate and lift off and you had your engine braking. The C class really deserved this supercharged engine as it delivers the performance required and also goes a long way to eradicating the shortcomings of its predecessor. With the C-class being MBIL’s biggest seller, this sort of performance was sorely needed but now there should be no complaints of performance deficiency.The C200K has added to its list of goodies in the ride and handling package. Thanks to a host of detail mods to suspension, chassis and accompanying mounts, the new set-up (all improvements now being collectiveky termed Direct Control) allows even more precise handling and steering while ride quality also gets a much needed boost. The rear anti-roll bar is an all-new reinforced affair, helping body control immensely, whatever speed the driver hurls it around.The ride quality is phenomenal and offers one of the best compromises between comfort and handling. The handling of the car is absolutely impeccable. You can push it as hard as you want, taking fast corners flat out while in the demanding tight ones, the car can be made to effect directional changes with the least input and without upsetting the occupants. It just rides over rough and undulating surfaces and is nearly impossible to upset the car mid-corner. Driving to Mahabaleshwar under massive sheets of rain, it was an absolute joy to take the C200K around corners, whether uphill or downhill, the car cornering as if on rails. The electronic aids prove handy in such conditions by reducing driver effort even while keeping things within safe limits. When really pushed hard or even beyond the limits the ESP, ESR and other driving aids took over and made sure that the car did not lose composure.Before we start talking about fuel efficiency it is better to remember that this is an expensive car and the buyer really shouldn’t be bothered majorly about fuel consumption. I had the car cruising between 90 and 120kmph in drive mode for the highway fuel efficiency test. At those speeds the engine is ticking over effortlessly between 2000 and 2200rpm and over the 100km run the car returned 14.4km to the litre on the highway and 8.8kmpl in the city. During our performance testing where we were red- lining all the time (which most users will not do) she returned 6.9kmpl. Considering the size of this car and its performance, the mileage figures are consistent.The C 200 Kompressor has now turned into an absolute driver’s car affording the owner/driver immense driving pleasure. This car gives you performance with smoothness and fuel efficiency which its predecessor could not muster. Thanks to the onset of competition (read that as Audis, BMWs and other possible models coming in via the CBU route), the changes were always on the cards. And now if only MBIL can fit the 16-inch alloys with 225/45 R16 low profile tyres and the stylish AMG kit, the car would have an even more purposeful edge to it while making it an absolute delight to drive.

PORSCHE Boxster

Hopping from a fire breather of an SUV into a smallish two-seater isn’t something I would have greeted with enthusiasm. I needn’t have worried because it was a classic roadster from Porsche, the creator of the Cayenne. While it wasn’t the supreme 911, it was the infinitely more modern mid-engined Boxster, the car which spawned a new breed of Weissach thoroughbred when it was launched in the last decade and one which has proved to be as big a success as the Cayenne is shaping up to be.The Boxster is one of the cars which has an Indian future writ large on itself. And it is natural considering the fact that Porsche had indicated that its pricing will be ultra competitive, being priced on par with international prices for the importers before tax and duty. I think that this is the way to go and could severely shake up the market for exotic cars, forcing maybe even the redoubtable Mercedes-Benz to have a relook at prices for its SLK, CLK, SL and M-class cars. (For more details on the same get in touch with Ashish Chordia of Shreyans Motors at 022-56604833).The Boxster comes with a choice of two engines, a 2.7-litre flat six and a more powerful 3.2-litre boxer engine. The latter is equipped to deliver 266PS (at 6200rpm) and comes with a new 6-speed manual transmission. There is also the option of a 5-speed Triptronic S transmission. The 2.7-litre flat-six offers 228PS but is just as exhilarating to drive. Both engines feature Porsche’s VarioCam variable valve timing gear plus a Bosch Motronic injection system. Unlike the 911, the engine in the Boxster is mounted in the middle of the chassis endowing the car with a near neutral balance. The car I drove in Dubai was precise in its steering yet sublime in its response and feel. The Boxster exhibits the same flat cornering attitude which many have come to associate with Porsches and its ride quality borders on the firm when being hustled while pottering in town it is quite comfortable. The Boxster rides on 18-inch alloys shod with 225/40 ZR 18 tyres up front and wider 265/35 ZR18 tyres on the rear.As a driver’s car, the Boxster is a purist’s dream and yet is also one of the safest cars to drive. When the salt settled, it was Chris Carr piloting the BUB Number Seven streamliner who ended the event the planet's fastest man on two-wheels with his 350.884 mph time.We did a fair job covering the unprecedented three-way battle for the world record with our 2006 Bonneville Streamliner Battle article and daily reports from the salt, but if you want to watch the action unfold with some amazing camerawork and the dulcet tones of Speed Channel's Dave Despain narrating, make sure to check out World's Fastest Motorcycle.A two-hour DVD produced by Ignition3 and Chet Burks Productions, WFM is a closer look at the world's fastest sport - land-speed racing. The 3rd International Motorcycle Speed Trials by BUB was land-speed racing at its finest, with three teams taking various turns as the fastest motorcycle on the planet while racing on the legendary surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats.The event pitted three different teams for the title. The favorite and eventual winner, the BUB Number Seven streamliner owned by Dennis Manning (BUB) and ridden by seven-time AMA Flat Track champion Chris Carr. A second entry, the upstart Ack Attack streamliner owned by Mike Akatiff and piloted by former BUB rider, Rocky Robinson, gave BUB a run for their money. The third player, and sentimental favorite for many in attendance at the event, was Sam Wheeler and his E-Z-Hook streamliner, which Wheeler was the designer and rider.WFM gets plenty of in-depth interviews from all the major players before, during, and after the five-day Speed Trials. WFM also gets inside the actual streamliners with onboard footage of both the Ack Attack and BUB machines as they make their record runs. These unique perspectives, as well as footage from the Ack, BUB, and E-Z-Hook shops in preparation for the event give viewers a behind-the-scene look at land-speed streamliner racing.What really sets WFM apart from everyone, and I have to admit even MCUSA, is the breathtaking camerawork. There's no shame in giving the Chet Burks Production and Speed Channel staff their due, because with an entire roster of cameramen and sound techs the quality is high.WFM also makes use of aerial footage from a helicopter, which is necessary to truly cover the unique aspect of Bonneville's 11-mile dragstrip. The camera work also captures the barren beauty of the Salt Flats themselves, whose popular and photogenic background you can recognize as the setting for many a car/motorcycle-related commercial advertisement - if you pay attention.Dave Despain is the perfect choice as narrator of WFM. Speed Channel's figurehead announcer speaks with all the authority his 30-plus years around professional motorcycle racing have earned. Also, like Anchorman character Ron Burgandy, Despain has a voice that could make a wolverine purr. It was a trip covering the event because all the journalists deferred to Despain during the press interviews (would you interrupt Dave Despain mid-sentence?), so I already kind of already had Despain's voice narrating the event in my head.The two-hour DVD is a compilation of the original two-part television show of the same name which aired on Speed Channel earlier this year. The DVD does include some extra footage in the form of a short documentary about the 1990 record-holding Easyriders streamliner piloted by Dave Campos, whose 16-year record was the one shattered.I watched the WFM shows when they were televised on Speed Channel as a matter of professional pride just to see how well Speed covered the event, since I was getting elbowed all week long by their numerous cameramen. As a secondary and petty reason, I wanted to see if I made it into the final cut. After watching on my DVR it was my wife who noticed me in the background of one shot doing my best to film the BUB streamliner take off from the start line en route to its world-record pace. Not much screen time for MCUSA scribbler Bart Madson, but please, dear readers, don't let that affect your decision for purchasing this fine DVD.The World's Fastest Motorcycle is a must for anyone interested in the Bonneville scene and we give it an enthusiastic MCUSA thumbs up.
